Bikers and hikers can leisurely walk up the old abandoned railroad bed to the “tunnel” and on to Poe Paddy and Poe Valley State Parks.

A swim in Poe Valley Lake would be refreshing after biking the 8 miles to get there.

Mountain bike or hike the endless “off-the-beaten-path” and sometimes rugged trails and logging roads in the area.

Wildlife

There is an abundance of wildlife in the area.

Observe bald eagles and osprey as they patrol the stream or watch playful mink run through hollow, fallen tree trunks.  Fox, Coyotes, Bobcats, Deer, turkey, wild ducks, geese and grouse are prevalent. Bears roam this entire region and are sometimes seen nosing around the cabin.

These are just some of the many birds and animals that you could encounter exploring the wooded valleys and ridges.

While exploring the forest, you can also search for wild, edible mushrooms in the spring and fall or pick huckleberries in late summer and tea berries in the autumn.

Kayaking, Canoeing & Tubing

White Water in Spring
White Water in Spring

Penn’s Creek can offer scenic and at times exciting, great water in the spring and occasionally during other high water periods in the summer and fall for Kayakers and Canoe enthusiasts alike. Class I and II rapids are present when the water levels are up.  Sometimes Class III waters are active in higher water levels.

Floating In Penn’s Creek

A beautiful, scenic, twenty-mile run can be made by launching below Coburn and putting out about a half-mile past the cabin.  Stop at Poe Paddy State Park along the way for lunch.

You can also “put-in” at the cabin and paddle downstream through some nice water for about 10 miles. Contact us for suggestions

Tubing is a great activity for families. June through August is the best time for this. Stream levels are usually low and water temperatures are refreshing. The same trip described above could fill the day.
